Young 5s and Kindergarten Registration

Every year, parents ask the question "how do we know if our child is ready for Young 5s or Kindergarten?" Since every child is different, our teachers suggest thinking about the following items to help your child have a successful start in school:

• Is your child able to separate from parents or guardians for several hours?
• Can your child listen and follow directions?
• Can your child share and take turns?
• Does your child treat other children with kindness?
• Is your child able to identify basic colors?
• Is your child able to retell familiar stories?
• Does your child know the ABC song, some nursery rhymes, and poems?
• Can your child identify some letters, such as the letters in their name?
• Is your child able to count (1-10) and recognize some numbers?
• Does your child independently dress and tend to bathroom needs?

The following documents need to be submitted to the Administration Office. Digital copies can be emailed to Betsy Elkins. Hard copies can be sent to 500 Washington, Chelsea, MI 48118. 

1. Original birth certificate Is preferred, however, we can accept copies.
2. Proof of Residency
   1. Current property tax bill OR
   2. Purchase agreement (if currently in the process of purchasing a home, a document showing the closing date) OR
   3. Closing statement (if recently purchased).
   4. IF RENTING - Current lease signed by all parties AND a current utility bill associated with the physical address. Documents must include parent/guardian information as a resident at this address. Gas/electric, city water/sewage, cable TV/internet.

4. Completed Health Appraisal

Communication

• Speak positively about your child going to school, rather than how much you’ll miss them. It will make the transition easier.
• BE POSITIVE about school.

Routines

• Teach your child to use the bathroom and wash hands independently.
• Help your child learn to dress him/herself independently:
• Teach your child how to use/put on buttons, sippers, shoes.
• Expect your child to pick up belongings and do simple chores at home.
• Stick to a consistent bedtime.
• Allow time for breakfast before school.
• Limit and monitor your child’s TV and screen time.

Play

• Play with your child daily to model and improve language development.
• Play games with words and numbers together.
• Encourage your child to practice drawing and coloring.
• Show your child how to write his/her name using an uppercase letter followed by lowercase letters.
• Read books to your child every single day!

Family to Do List

• Attend Young 5s / Kindergarten orientation.
• Register for Safety Town in June.
• Visit the North Creek playground to play this summer.
