Artificial Intelligence
District Commitment
Our Commitment to Responsible AI Use
Chelsea School District is committed to preparing students for the future by integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into learning in a way that is ethical, responsible, and aligned with our Portrait of a Graduate. AI has the potential to support critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity, helping students become adaptable learners in an evolving world.
Guiding Principles
Our approach to AI in education is built on the following principles:
- Equity & Access – We strive to ensure all students have access to AI tools and education, regardless of background or resources. We will work to close the digital divide by providing necessary devices and training.
- Transparency – Families will be informed about how AI is used in classrooms, including instructional materials, assessments, and operations.
- Privacy & Security – Student data is protected under FERPA and COPPA regulations, and personally identifiable information will not be shared with AI tools.
- Ethical & Responsible Use – We encourage students to critically evaluate AI-generated content and to use AI as a tool for learning, not a substitute for independent thinking and effort.
- Human Agency – AI is designed to enhance teaching and learning, not replace human judgment, creativity, or decision-making.
Student AI Use Guidelines
If no mention of AI is made, students are not to use AI.
AI use in assignments will be determined by teachers, and students will be required to cite AI contributions in a manner determined by the teacher.
AI should be used as a learning aid, not as a substitute for student thinking in completing assignments or assessments.
Family Engagement & Communication
Chelsea School District values family partnerships in navigating the evolving role of AI in education. We will provide ongoing updates, resources, and opportunities for families to learn more about AI and its impact on student learning. We welcome feedback and collaboration as we refine our AI practices to best support our students and community.
Together, we can ensure that AI is used to empower students, enhance learning, and prepare them for the opportunities and challenges of the future.

-Never use AI without explicit teacher permission.
-Don't submit AI-generated work as your own.
-Be prepared to explain your thought process and how you used AI.
-Ask your teacher if you're unsure about appropriate AI use in their class.
How NOT to Use AI at School
- Copying work directly from AI and pretending it’s yours.
- Not sharing how you used AI when your teacher asks.
- Using AI as a substitute for your thinking and growth.
Teachers may:
- Ask you to explain how you worked on your assignment.
- Check drafts or AI transcripts to see how you used the tool.

We’re Learning, Too!
Every year, we’ll review how we use AI in school to make sure it’s helpful and fair. Your ideas matter, so let us know what you think!
