All District facilities practice Integrated Pest Management to minimize the use of any pesticides on school grounds. NATURAL RESOURCES AND ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION ACT (EXCERPT) Act 451 of 1994 PART 85 FERTILIZERS. Pesticide Control and Regulation 637, Pesticide Use has certain requirements when making a pesticide application in schools, day care centers, public buildings, or health care facilities. Requires public schools to notify parents/guardians and school employees (who have requested to be notified) at least 48 hours (two business days) prior to any pesticide applications on school grounds. The term “pesticide” includes insecticides, herbicides, rodenticides and fungicides. The notification requirement extends to both indoor and outdoor pesticide applications. Excluded from the notification requirement are antimicrobials such as disinfectants, sanitizers or deodorizers, insecticide baits and rodenticide baits.

Pest Management in Buildings
Each month the district has a professional pest management company inspect certain areas of the buildings and they utilize the least aggressive measures to control pests if found. Normally, baits and gels are utilized.
As required by State of Michigan law, you will receive advance notice regarding the non-emergency application of a pesticide such as an insecticide, fungicide or herbicide, other than a bait or gel formulation, that is made to our buildings or grounds during this school year. Notification is not given for the use of sanitizers, germicides, disinfectants or anti-microbial cleaners. In certain emergencies, such as an infestation of stinging insects, pesticides may be applied without prior notice to prevent injury to students, but you will be notified following any such application.
Advance notice of pesticide applications, other than baits or gel formulations, made to the school will be given at least 48 hours before the application. The two methods of notifications are: (1) a posting at the main entrance to the building, and (2) a posting on Chelsea Operations Department Notification page.
